A Wonderful Journey From Mass Communication To PPI

By: Tahir Odhano

It was the time when summer holydays were to be announced and all the students were busy for taking their internship letters from the departments.

I decided to have my internship at Pakistan Press International (PPI) news agency while renowned journalist Sohail Sangi appreciated my idea and guided me. He asked me that do you have any idea about the PPI? If you want to work there, you have to work hard.”

I got my internship letter from the Chairperson and decided to join news agency from June 1, 2011.

I went to head office of PPI at Karachi situated near Sindh Secretariat. I met with News Editor, Nasir Aijaz. He interviewed me and gave me a press release by saying that make it into news format, only then I could consider you for internship here. I was too nervous while making news but ultimately I was selected as an internee.

The PPI  not only provides quality news but it also produces and polishes new journalists in the media market as we were three internees there. Two of us were from University of Sindh while other one was from University of Karachi, who was already working there since one and half year.

Every morning, we had to arrive at 10:00 am and leave at 5:00 pm. I used to come with my friend Noman Soomro on his bike, he was a marketing officer in Postal Life Insurance at Saddar, Karachi.

The news like; crime, commerce, health, politics and others were reported by the district, taluka and city reporters of PPI in all over the Pakistan, who send those news via fax or email to the sub-editors.

After converting all of them into news format, these were shared with different newspapers of Pakistan, includes Daily Dawn, The Express Tribune, The News, The Business Recorder and others.

The senior journalist and Chief News Editor Farooq Moin, News Editor Nasir Aijaz, Bureau Chief Shafquat Soomro, senior Sub-Editor  Adnan Khalid and others were very cooperative and I did not imagine that one day I will start my career under the supervision of such personalities.

Consequently, I completed my internship and got my experience certificate of two months, while the hard life of Karachi and learning place of PPI really gave me a lot of experience and made me strong for the future challenges.
